4. Mission of the Subspecialty
Mettapracharak Hospital (Wat Rai Khing) is committed to becoming a center of excellence in ophthalmology, which represents the hospital's core mission. To achieve this goal, the hospital continuously advances education, research, academic productivity, knowledge generation, and innovation in ophthalmology. These efforts support the enhancement of clinical services, facilitate knowledge transfer to healthcare networks, and promote higher standards in ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment.
The institution is also dedicated to educating and developing ophthalmic healthcare professionals to meet the country's evolving healthcare needs and strengthen the national health service system in line with rapid advances in medical science. Furthermore, the hospital aims to contribute new knowledge to both the national and international ophthalmic communities. This mission aligns with the hospital's vision of becoming Thailand's National Eye Institute with international capabilities, a high degree of self-reliance, and a commitment to ensuring sustainable eye health for the population.
The Center of Excellence in Ophthalmology at Mettapracharak Hospital (Wat Rai Khing) was accredited as a residency training institution in Ophthalmology and a fellowship training center in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2010. Subsequently, fellowship programs in Retina and Glaucoma were established. To date, the center has graduated 79 ophthalmologists and subspecialty fellows. These graduates have made significant contributions to patient care, academic development, and leadership within the field of ophthalmology. Consistent with the Center's mission, the training program seeks to produce ophthalmologists who possess strong ethical standards, professional competence, teamwork skills, patient-centered care, and a lifelong commitment to learning.
Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a subspecialty of ophthalmology concerned with diseases and disorders affecting the orbit, eyelids, lacrimal drainage system, and periocular structures. Over the past decade, substantial advances have occurred in both scientific knowledge and medical technology within this field. Innovations include minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, image-guided navigation systems for complex orbital surgery, ocular prosthesis fabrication, reconstructive surgery, correction of congenital and acquired deformities, and aesthetic periocular surgery.
The management of patients in this subspecialty therefore requires comprehensive medical knowledge together with highly refined and technically demanding surgical skills to maximize treatment effectiveness and patient safety while preventing and managing complications.
The Center is committed to training fellows in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to acquire comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical clinical skills, develop research competency, and effectively transfer knowledge to junior trainees. The training program is designed to meet the healthcare needs of communities, society, and the national healthcare system.
Graduates of the program are expected to:

Through these objectives, the program aims to meet the nation's healthcare needs in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery while contributing sustainably to Thailand's healthcare system.
In addition, the division encourages active participation from trainees, graduates, employers, the Department of Medical Services, stakeholders, and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of Thailand in the ongoing development of the training curriculum and the refinement of the subspecialty's mission.
