Residency Training

Ophthalmic diseases significantly affect people’s vision and quality of life—especially as Thailand moves fully into an aging society. Metta Pracharak Hospital (Wat Rai Khing) therefore defines its mission for residency training to align with the mission of the Ophthalmological Society of Thailand and the mission of the hospital. The aim is to produce good ophthalmologists with knowledge, capability, standard professionalism, and ethics, in order to respond to community and societal needs, as well as the expectations and requirements of Thailand’s healthcare system. In this process, stakeholders and representatives of the trainees also play a role in shaping the training program’s mission. 

The course for Metta Pracharak Hospital (Wat Rai Khing) focuses on training residents to become ophthalmologists with expertise in both theoretical and practical aspects of ophthalmology, as well as other skills, including the ability to work with professional conduct and etiquette (professionalism). Residents should be able to care for patients appropriately, effectively, with compassion and attention to safety, while placing the patient at the center of care using an integrated (holistic) approach. 

They must be able to perform duties without needing close supervision, demonstrate commitment and readiness to become lifelong learners, and show appropriate behavior toward colleagues within their own profession and other professions. They should be able to work in teams together as a multidisciplinary team—together with patients and their families. They should understand the country’s healthcare system, the patient care quality development system, and the appropriate use of healthcare resources, including health promotion for the public. This is intended to meet ophthalmology-related healthcare needs and produce the greatest sustainable benefit for the nation as a whole.
